How to Find the Holy Communion Dress of your Dreams

Above  left Ava Dress – silk bodice with layers of tulle £159. Right Amy Tulle Dress – cotton with spot tulle overlay and sleeves £139

There are so many different styles of Holy Communion Dresses to choose from. Some, to be honest, look a little too grown up, fussy or look just like a bridal gown! In our Communion Dress Collection, we have tried to bridge the gap between what she wants and what mum finds acceptable so both agree and choose the perfect dress.

The beauty of our service is that we make all our dresses to order and so you can add, take away, change the sleeve, adjust the desired length etc. If the changes are within reason, there is no extra charge, but otherwise, we can give you the cost option for exactly what you want.

The other advantage of our service is that the dress will fit perfectly so if your little darling is not an average 8 year old, you can let us know and we can ask you for some key measurements. These measurements will be compared to our standard patterns and then adjusted accordingly, thus ensuring the perfect fit for that big day.

Above left Jemima Dress – cotton bodice with lots of layers of tulle and netting £159. Right Gabriella Dress – Lace overlay bodice with silk skirt £205

If you want a accessories to match, you only need to ask! We can make almost anything from the same fabrics, lace, tulle or trims. We will just cost it on request and give you the option to order. Our hand knitted bolero (£49) is also perfect to keep that spring chill at bay.

Sue, as designer and Naomi, as pattern maker, are always on hand to offer advice if you want to call or email. We are also happy to post out any swatches before you order to make sure it is exactly as you want it. After it is such a special day and we realise the importance of getting it right! We like to have 6-8 weeks before the required delivery date but if you have left it a little late, don’t worry, we can always prioritise your order.

Wedding Planning? Don’t Forget the Flower Girls and Page Boys!

There are hundreds of Wedding Planner Guides out there but almost none mention when to sort out the little ones! On your month by month plan, do add in some time to buy their outfits – at least eight weeks before. Sometimes, if they are not local to you, this takes a little more planning to meet up and try on some styles, and to see what works for you and them (this is especially important for the little girls as their  feelings always show!)

A lot of our brides have a definite idea of what they want before they consult us and some just want to see what will suit the little ones involved. The beauty of our service is that we offer a bespoke service so you can mix and match our styles to have exactly what you want.

We recommend that you look at our website or come in to our shop in Tunbridge Wells to get an idea of what you want. If you would like to coordinate the sash colour of their dresses with the adult bridesmaids, we have a selection of over fifty colours to choose from. We can arrange to post out swatches to you for you to colour match with the bridesmaids, flowers etc.

The Jemima dress (above) is our most popular dress – layers of tulle for a magical look and choice of silk sash colour included in the price – from £149. To see all our dress styles and page boy outfits, visit our Wedding Section

The process of ordering is easy – we need at least eight weeks before the required date to make the patterns and add to our production schedule.  If online, order the style you like and if you are confident that the children are a standard size, go with their age for the size. Our clothing is pretty standard on sizing. If, however, you have a super skinny one and a very tall one, then it is best to provide us with their measurements and we can make them so they fit perfectly on the day. If you want to do this, just order as usual and follow up with an email saying that you would like to give us measurements. We will then ask to contact the mums and ask for the key measurements we require. Naomi, our pattern maker will then compare their measurements with our patterns and adjust accordingly. There is no extra charge for this. It’s as simple as that!

Our silk George shorts  (£69) and matching cummerbund (£29) with either our silk peter pan shirt (£69) or pure cotton peter pan shirt  (£45) is our most popular page boy outfit

If you come into the shop, Sue or Naomi are always on hand to fit and take measurements for each dress, help with choosing the sash colour and advise on any other matter. They are patient and helpful and will make it as enjoyable as possible for both the girls and boys (boys generally aren’t so keen!!)

Our bespoke service allows you to create your own vision. Some of our brides have seen a sleeve shape they like or a lace trim they would like to add or maybe a sash in a favourite Liberty print. All this is possible as we can source new fabrics and make the pattern especially for you. Prices for this service vary according to the fabrics required and man hours to create it. But wherever possible, we try to keep the cots in line with our other styles. If you would like to discuss your ideas with us, please call us on +44 (0)1892 513293 or email us –

Vintage Style Knitwear for Autumn

As we are approaching autumn and the sun is cooling, it’s time to think about what to wear when it’s not so warm but still not cold enough for a winter coat. Our hand knitted coats are perfect for this time of year as you can just pop them on over a t-shirt or short sleeved dress. Then when it gets colder through the months to Christmas, layer it over some cosy woollens.

All our girls knitted coats are hand knitted in our own merino cashmere blend, made for us in Italy in our own exclusive muted shades.

Our Shawl Collared Coat is one of our best sellers as it is styled like a cardi coat or coatigan so suitable for everyday wear on any occasion. The inspiration for this coat came from a pattern from the ’40s which Sue adapted to the current style and yarn. Available in sizes 2-3y to 6-7y from £75.

Another best selling style is our Classic Swing Coat which was inspired by a baby pram coat pattern form the ’50s. Sue adapted the pattern so it is now made up to age 5-6yrs in pink and soft plum.

Finally, the most versatile of all is our hooded poncho, made in all sizes from 0-12m to 5-6yrs in three shades of our merino cashmere blend.

Greetings for a Royal 90th Birthday

On Saturday 11th June, the Royal family observed the Trooping the Colour parade from the Buckingham Palace balcony, marking the official birthday of the Queen.

As always Prince George and Princess Charlotte were dressed in a traditional style. The short sleeved blue trimmed Peter Pan shirt with matching blue shorts is the exact same outfit his father Prince William wore to Prince Harry’s christening in 1984.

It’s not the first time Prince George has appeared in his father’s style. For George’s first appearance on the balcony, he wore a pale blue outfit trimmed with white frills, which was very similar to one worn by Prince William as a child.

Dress up your little Prince in a Sue Hill James shirt and romper shorts set. The shirt onesie has a Peter Pan collar and breast pocket trimmed with pale blue piping worn with shorts and button down braces.

Princess Charlotte was dressed in a sweet embroidered pale pink smocked dress with a bow clip in her hair. Our hand smoked rosebud dress is very similar to the dress pictured.

Our pink bow Mary Jane shoes handmade by Ickle Shooz are similar to Charlotte’s. These soft leather baby shoes are individually handmade in the UK by shoemaker Nigel Bolton.

The fabric print presents all the characters in the well known children’s novel. This baby girl dress in a beautiful shade of lavender has puff sleeves, a tie back sash  and netting underneath the circular skirt. We’re in love with the light and summery feel of this dress.

These ultra soft leather shoes are individually hand made in the UK by shoemaker, Nigel Bolton. This makes such a adorable outfit for a childrens tea party.p9210853-001As the hot summer days approach, you may have a few invitations to garden parties to celebrate a birthday or special anniversary. The Liberty print Eloise dress is one of our favorites and the perfect addition to a girls wardrobe for the Summer. We love the pretty puff sleeves and the satin bow detail on the waist. Pair it with a hand knitted bolero to make the perfect outfit for a special occassion.
